Baccarat, a 243-year old French firm known for its exquisite - and exquisitely expensive - crystal objects is offering a new take on an old favorite. A modern chandelier - call it 'deconstructed' - is pas cher. One could even go so far as to label it a bargain, though definitely not cheap. Paris-based designer Arik Levy chopped up Baccarat's classic chandelier. Now, it's on sale, by the piece, for $1990.

The newly christened Fantome chandelier "can be used as a design element, whether its 55 lined up in a room, or as a complete object," Levy told one New York Times writer. How does Baccarat reconcile this departure from its long-cultivated tony image? Simple: they are positioning the piece as "intellectual." Well, maybe so. The concept certainly is.
