Trends :: Gay and Lesbian TourismGay and lesbian travel is one of the fastest growing, lucrative niches in the hospitality industry. Recent research showed that gay men spend on average 30% more than their straight counterparts. Luxury providers are just beginning to realize the power of the gay and lesbian dollar, and the niche has the reputation of trend-setting and being brand loyal - a dream combination. To address the growing demands of sophisticated, gay consumers, an organization called The World's Foremost Gay and Lesbian Hotels, was established to be a trusted source for best. Similar to Leading Hotels of the World, it’s an international alliance of upscale gay and /or lesbian hotels, resorts, guest houses and inns, where all member properties must meet high standards for membership. To better engage this market, luxe travel products will need to create more high value holidays (such as cruising, eco and adventure tourism) and entertainment packages geared specifically for gay travelers. Also, those destinations with an established gay infrastructure (comprising of bars, accommodation, tour operators and literature) such as Las Vegas and Cape Town, South Africa, which also offer commitment ceremonies to same-sex couples, will have a leg up on the competition. Take Buenos Aires for example, the first capital in Latin American to legalize same-sex marriages, which now has its first five-star all-gay hotel, The Axel. |
